Tell us a bit about your journey to be a therapist...
My initial interest in psychology stemmed from my curiosity to learn about human behaviour, motivations and tendencies. However, as I went through different classes and courses, I began to understand the fundamental need for mental health awareness in India. My passion in this field further developed when I first interned at an organisation where I worked with students to understand the issues they faced. It was during this time that I realised my zeal for understanding and supporting individuals on their journeys of self-discovery.
What can your clients expect after their first session?
I hope that after our first session, clients feel heard, understood, hopeful, and validated. I hope they feel a sense of connection and possibility. I want them to experience a shift in their awareness of their emotions and their bodily sensations. Lastly, I hope they feel that they’re not alone - as therapists, we can support them through their distress and we genuinely have their best interests at heart.
What do you look forward to about your work as a therapist?
I look forward to building a secure relationship between the therapist and the client. People possess an incredible capacity for growth and resilience, even in the face of immense challenges, especially when they have the kind of emotional support they need. It is within this secure connection that the clients often find the courage to confront deeply rooted challenges. Seeing the clients open up, transform, and start trusting themselves, is such a beautiful experience.
Which therapy approach do you use in your work?
I largely use a process - based, relational, emotion - focused, and attachment - oriented approach in therapy. This means that we work together to help the client build a more secure connection with themselves and others, while making space for a variety of emotions, using our therapeutic relationship.
How do you build a therapeutic relationship with your clients?
I believe the therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of healing. Our work together would involve creating a secure base where the client can explore their vulnerabilities and take risks within our relationship, all while feeling safe and validated. Through this process, we'll identify patterns and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others. We don’t just talk about things, we explore and experience them in real - time, within our relationship. I would also want the client to be open about any feedback they have for me, or anything that is not working for them in sessions.
What do you do when not working?
When I'm not immersed in a world of therapy or reading, you’ll find me having cold coffee while watching something, listening to Bollywood songs, going for a walk, meeting people I love, colouring, dancing or singing!
